Who is Lord Stanley?
With it being Playoff Hockey time, I thought it would be interesting to research the history of the Stanley Cup! Here are some fun facts and fabulous resources about the Stanley Cup.
Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley was the Lord of Preston and the 16th Earl of Derby. He donated the cup in 1892 with the intention to have it awarded to the "championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada."
In 1893 the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was the first team awarded the Stanley Cup. At the time the Stanley Cup was called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.
With a record 23 Stanley Cups, the Montreal Canadiens have the most Stanley Cup wins in the NHL.
As the only trophy in professional sports to have all members of the winning team inscribed on it, bands have to be retired to make room for new winners. The retired bands are kept and placed in Lord Stanley's vault. In 1962 the original trophy that was donated by Lord Stanley was retired. The cup that replaced the original one in 1962, is the only other one in existence.
The Stanley Cup stands at 35 1/4 inches and weighs 34 1/2 pounds. Visit the Official Site of the Hockey Hall of Fame for the complete measurements.
